I’ve recently entered new waters in my professional career: I’m now an independent marketing consultant. As such, I’m trying new thing—like this blog!
The truth is, I was blogging over a decade ago on Blogger, but it was a personal blog and the stakes were much lower. Reflecting back on this period, I can’t help but think when memes started popping on the internet. Remember, back in the days when people would capitalize the “I” in Internet, as if it was some exotic tropical island in the South Pacific?!
Well, there was one particular meme that featured six boxes. Within these boxes, the meme artist would ply his or her talents and express what various people think of them.
Thinking back to this reminds me specifically of the box that projects what others think I’m doing: a picturing me on Internet Island: laptop by my side, sipping margaritas, and wheeling and dealing the biggest deals while consulting Fortune 500 companies on digital marketing. Well in all honesty, it’s not quite like that—especially at the beginning. Yes, I intend to be honest and not sugarcoat the world here with my experience as a consultant. There are ups and downs, and they have a penchant to come out of nowhere.
Trying New Things
But one thing I have learned is trying new things. For example, my new site is about to launch and I’m writing (obviously), designing, and coding it all by myself. Sure, it’s taking me a little longer, but the experience and knowledge that I’m picking up along the way makes it a worthwhile endeavor. In addition to breaking down countless websites, I’ve scoured the web for whitepapers, best practices, and tips and tricks on this topic.
Last week, I must have signed up for one particular site’s lead magnet because today, I got an email from them that pointed this out. Honestly, I did not remember the company’s name. It was a nice email that slipped into my “primary” folder and they asked me if I had any questions about the materials I downloaded and their service (read upsell). So, I wrote back to them as follows, “Honestly, I don’t remember downloading it. Sorry.”
Short. Sweet. Respectful. I thought that would be the end of it. Well, lo and behold, I got a response within 2 minutes. True, I won’t buy their service, but they taught me how I should approach customer service, with a personal touch.
Here’s My Offer
That personal touch is something I wish to emulate, and my first attempt at this will be launching a free 30-minute consultation. If you’re interested, please schedule a call and let’s see how I can help you put a dash of awesomeness into your marketing efforts.
It’s funny how we can find lessons—even great ones—in the most unexpected places; we just have to keep our eyes open, because they can come out of nowhere.
