Before we get started, let me put out a disclaimer: this article was inspired by conversation with a client who was trying to understand how they could “speed up” their automation. The automation in question ran for 12 months! So naturally, the client needed to see the automation in realtime.

Having said that, I will steer the article towards this particular issue, but we’ll do a little review so you can see the full picture of ActiveCampaign’s marketing automation in action!

Understanding ActiveCampaign’s Marketing Automation Module

First, what is marketing automation? Simply put, it’s a smart way to handle your marketing tasks automatically. By setting up rules based on how your audience behaves and what they prefer, ActiveCampaign does the work for you. This automation ensures that your marketing messages reach the right people at the right time.

A Beginner’s Guide to Setting Up Your First Automation with ActiveCampaign

Here’s how you can set up your first automation:

  1. Start Simple: Choose a basic workflow. For example, send a welcome email when someone joins your mailing list.
  2. Add Conditions: As you get more comfortable, add conditions based on user actions, like opening an email or visiting your website.
  3. Incorporate Waits and Emails: Insert waits to give your contacts time to interact with your emails, followed by subsequent actions based on their responses.

QA Your Workflow Without the Wait

You don’t have to wait to see your automation in action. Here’s how to quickly QA your workflow:

  1. Manual Addition: Go into your contact record and manually add yourself to the automation.
When viewing a contact record, you have the option to manually add them to an automation
  1. Special View: Click “View” to see the automation from a user flow perspective. This helps you understand the path without editing it.
After you add someone to an automation, within their record click on that automation, which will allow you to view the actual funnel that the contact took.
  1. Skip Waits: You have an option to “Skip this wait action,” allowing you to see the results instantly.
Finally, when you’re viewing the contact record’s automation path, you can skip a waiting period, thereby allowing you to effectively QA your automations.
